Earlier this year, advocacy leaders from the European thyroid cancer community gathered for the first time in Amsterdam for a one day summit. The leaders who participated in the meeting represent groups who are active at both the national and international levels.
The meeting provided a forum for participants to exchange perspectives, network, and share best practices. “We are all heading in the same direction yet in such different ways and it is truly fantastic to sit around the table and exchange ideas - learning from another's experiences and questioning how best we can make progress as individual groups and as an international team”, said Helen Hobrough from Thyroid Cancer Support Group Wales.
The meeting covered a wide variety of topics and enabled patient group leaders to share their own personal journey as thyroid cancer survivors. Raising awareness for thyroid cancer was a big focus of the conversation, and in particular ways in which advocacy groups can support and collaborate with one another on a national and international level. One participant summarized this first meeting in the following words: “It was a wonderful gathering. It was very interesting, motivational and inspiring. When is the second Thyroid Cancer Patient Group Leader Summit?’
